Winners Will Sing the National Anthem at a 66ers Game This Season

San Bernardino, CA – The Inland Empire 66ers are looking for the most talented singers and musicians in the Inland Empire to help the 66ers, Class ‘A’ Partner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, salute the “Stars and Stripes” by singing the National Anthem at 66ers home games this year. Come showcase your talents and try to sing your way into the ballpark on Saturday, March 5th at 10AM at Inland Center Mall.

Interested individuals and groups should be ready to be discovered in the Center Court area of Inland Center Mall. Registration begins at 10:00 AM. The event will run until 2 PM or until all interested parties present have had a chance to perform, whichever comes first.

Participants can either sing or play the National Anthem at the event. Any individual or group playing the national anthem must be able to transport their instruments by hand. No sheet music or lyric pages are allowed, and no pre-recorded background music will be permitted. Performances must be limited to 90 seconds or less.

Once Bernie and the gang have made their decisions, Inland Empire’s best performers will be selected to “Advance to the Show” and perform in front of a packed house at Arrowhead Credit Union Park just moments before the first pitch of an exciting Inland Empire 66ers game.

The Inland Empire 66ers 2011 season begins on Thursday, April 7th when the California League partners of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim host the rival Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. So, the first episode of Willy’s Wire on AngelsWin.com came and went. It was the first chance for the fans to pose their questions directly to the Angels Director of Scouting Ric Wilson (aka Willy). As we eagerly await our next update from him, let’s look back at some of the things we learned today.

First off, we learned that Ric Wilson is one class act. While on the road, he juggled his schedule to fit in a chat to talk with the fans. Considering that he is still getting himself established into his new position, preparing for this year’s draft, making some changes to the Angels’ scouting department, and crisscrossing the country, that says a lot about his dedication to the fans and the organization.

Second, we learned that an hour is still not enough time to get in all the questions! In our chat, we had 25 questions from 16 different people asked and answered. The queue was lined up with so many questions that getting to everyone was a challenge. Apparently the fans are ready for baseball after a long winter off—even if that means logging into a chat at 9 am!

Third, we learned that Willy’s had a hand in landing a lot of the current Angels’ talent, and he expects a big year out of several prospects. But, like Eddie Bane before him, Willy isn’t going to tip his hand too much about which way he’s looking for the first pick in 2011. We know it’s a deep draft and the scouting season is just underway, but we know he’ll get all the talent ranked and organized by draft day.

Lastly, we learned that there’s no place that the Angels won’t go this year to find their talent—even Wayne, Oklahoma (and don’t go asking about the ground rule doubles there!). They are boosting their international scouting division and will be aggressive around the globe to bring in premiere talent.

By Brent Hubbard - AngelsWin.com Columnist

A few days ago, I was lucky to be in attendance for the Inland Empire 66ers – Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Affiliation Celebration, representing Angelswin.com. As you may know, the Angels switched affiliations of their High-A California League minor league club from the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to the Inland Empire 66ers, in effect trading affiliations with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Angels had been with the Quakes for ten seasons; Many of the players now on the Angels had called the Epicenter home during their High-A Seasons. As such the Epicenter seemed like the minor league home to many Angels fans, being the closest minor league team to the Angels. Yet Arrowhead Credit Union Ballpark is a great place to catch a game as well and will quickly seem like seem like home to many of the Angels minor leaguers and to all of the Angels minor league fans when the season starts on April 7th.

The first thing I noticed after arriving at the ballpark was how nice the place was kept up. It is really a great stadium inside and out. The familiar Angels “A” logo was everywhere.

As I was escorted into the clubhouse, I noticed the entire thing had been painted red. Red was everywhere.

Los Angeles Angels Players

As of last week all of the players have reported to Tempe in preparation for their first exhibition game this Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and for a solid month of contests in Arizona before the regular season opener in Kansas City against the Royals on March 31st. With the 2011 season nigh for the Los Angeles Angels, our entire staff of AngelsWin.com writers and contributors were asked recently to supply their take on several questions heading into the 2011 campaign.

Once the Angels' regular season concludes we'll circle back to this Blog entry to see who responded with the most correct answers from AngelsWin.com.  Should be fun to look back on at that time.

Today the Orange County Register concluded their top 50 greatest Angels feature with their 10-1 list and revealed how the panel voted after counting down from 50 to 1 which began on Monday of this week.

OCR Angels Blogger Sam Miller revealed that AngelsWin.com's own Chuck Richter had 46 of the top 50 Angels on his ballot, along with the OCR's own Dan Woike. Truth be told, AngelsWin.com is a website that incorporates their own panel of votes for features like this, so Senior Editor Geoff Bilau, Senior Writers Adam Dodge and David Saltzer and our entire panel of writers helped form our top 50 list to Keith Sharon last winter.

According to Sam Miller, here’s the highest-ranked players left off the list from the panel of voters:

    * Earl Bloom: Jim Edmonds
    * Keith Sharon: Bengie Molina
    * Jeff Biggs: Torii Hunter
    * Chuck Richter: Bobby Knoop
    * James Rygg: Torii Hunter
    * Mat Gleason: Fred Lynn
    * Sam Miller: Don Baylor
    * Jenelynn Russo: Jered Weaver
    * Randy Youngman: Albie Pearson
    * Dan Woike: Bobby Knoop
    * Bill Plunkett: Chone Figgins
    * Tim Mead: Jarrod Washburn
    * Ellen Bell: Scot Shields
    * Jeff Miller: Torii Hunter
    * Mark Whicker: Brian Downing

Downing, at No. 8 overall, was the highest-ranked player left off a ballot.

In looking at the list of Angel players left off our list, I'm pretty comfortable excluding Bobby Knoop from the top 50. Knoop, was an above average defender, but lousy hitter (career .236 BA, .296 OBP, .334 SLG).

What I would like to know is how Bill Stoneman didn't even crack the top 50? -- We ranked him at #37 -- Stoneman was a big reason for the Angels success and World Championship season in 2002, but for signing Mike Scioscia three years prior. Stoneman also boasted a roster that had playoff appearances in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Stoneman going into the 2004 season may have had the best offseason a GM could have, signing Vladimir Guerrero (who won the MVP in '04), Bartolo Colon (who won the Cy Young award in 2005), Kelvim Escobar ('04: 3.93 ERA, 191 K's) and Jose Guillen (smacked 27 HR's and drove in 104 runs in '04).

Well, enough of that, we could dissect and argue the entire list with the other panel of voters all day long so let's take a look at how AngelsWin.com voted. A big thank thank you to Keith Sharon and the Orange County Register for having our input included in their feature.

Team to wear 1961 uniform on four “Flashback Fridays” beginning in late May

ANAHEIM, CA -- The Angels announced today the second “Flashback Friday” uniform that will be worn beginning with the May 20th game against the Atlanta Braves. The club has chosen to wear the Los Angeles Angels uniforms worn during the 1961-1965 campaigns when the Halos made their home in Los Angeles prior to moving south to Anaheim in 1966. These retro jerseys are part of the “Flashback Friday” celebration as the Angels will wear throwback uniforms on all 13 Friday home games. The 1961-1965 Los Angeles Angels uniform will also be worn on the following Friday home games; June 3rd versus NY Yankees, June 10th versus KC Royals and July 1st versus LA Dodgers.

The uniforms provided by Majestic will feature the vintage-style club lettering and piping along the neck, sleeves and pants that embodied the early 60’s look worn by some of the very first Angels including Eli Grba, Albie Pearson, Dean Chance and Jim Fregosi. In addition, the left sleeve on the uniform will feature the 50th Anniversary commemorative patch, while the right sleeve will bear the original LA mark. The hats provided by New Era feature the silver halo that circles the top of the hat, the LA logo on the front and will also bear the 50th Anniversary logo on the left side of the cap. Rawlings will be supplying helmets to the Angels with the appropriate look and style of that era.

Game used uniform items from each “Flashback Friday” will be auctioned off following the completion of each era. The Majestic jerseys and New Era caps will be available for sale in the Angel Stadium Team Store in the coming weeks. For more details surrounding the Angels 50th Anniversary visit: angels.com/50
