Monday the Angels lost to the Oakland Athletics 5-4.
Despite shoulder tightness Joe Saunders threw three innings allowing four hits and two runs - one earned, one walk & no strikeouts. Neither Mike Scioscia nor Saunders believe the pain to be serious which is good considering the injury to Ervin Santana. As of now the Angels are not looking outside the organization for pitching help. Pedro Martinez and former Angel Paul Byrd are still on the free agent market, plus there is the continued speculation as to the availability of Padres ace, Jake Peavy.
My take. I'd love to see the Angels try and make a deal for Peavy. He's under contract until 2012 with an option for 2013. He'd be a great replacement in case John Lackey walks after this season, or even better, someone to pitch along side Lackey, Santana, Jered Weaver and Saunders for the next four seasons. On the AngelsWin.com message board we like to talk about "sick lineups" but that would be the sickest five man rotation in baseball.
Nick Adenhart looks to re-find his confidence after a disappointing 2008.
Former Angel greats Bobby Grich and Chuck Finely are in camp passing on their knowledge of the game to the next generation of Halos.
Brian Fuentes is out of the WBC entirely with tightness in his lower back.
Today The Angels will face The Cleveland Indians at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Jered Weaver will be on the mound.
