Around The Halo 3/9/2009

On Sunday afternoon the Angels blasted the San Francisco Giants 8-1.

Just days after signing a four year, $30 million dollar contract, the Angels learned that Ervin Santana will open the season on the disabled list with pain in his pitching elbow. On the bright side, it doesn't appear to be an injury that will keep Santana out for very long.

"We'll evaluate it and see when he can start picking up a baseball, but we don't expect it to be anything that's longer term than, maybe, pushing him back into the middle of April," - Mike Scioscia.

As a result the Angels will start 2009 much like they did in 2008 with two of their top starters out. Luckily for the Halos, pitching is their strength and so far this spring they've gotten good performances from pitchers Dustin Moseley (3.60 era) , Nick Adenhart (1.80 era) and Shane Loux (0.00 era). Plus Kelvim Escobar is on the mend and could be back in May or June.

That said, if Tony Reagins thinks the club is in need of another starting pitcher the Angels have a log jam of infielders with the same skill sets in Chone Figgins, Macier Izturis and Erick Aybar.

Torii Hunter returned to the lineup going 1-2 with a run batted in.

Today Joe Saunders will take the mound against the Oakland A's
