The Angels defeated the Oakland A's last night 5-2. Joe Saunders was in control all night and pitched into the 7th inning with Jose Arredondo and Brian Fuentes closing out the game in dominating fashion.
Mike Scioscia's decision to DH Mike Napoli has paid off in abundance. In two starts at DH, Napoli is 6 for 7 with 2 walks and 3 RBI. Scioscia should take advantage of the situation while Vladimir Guerrero is still out with a pectoral injury. The Angels have a much better offense with Napoli at DH instead of Macier Izturis.
Speaking of Guerrero, he will be examined again by Dr. Yocum when the team returns home on Wednesday. Guerrero rans the bases and swung the bat for the first time and said he was "pain free" but "not ready to face live pitching".
Ervin Santana took his first step towards returning last night, pitching 4.2 innings for the Quakes down at Rancho Cucamunga. Santana wasn't particularly sharp but he did make it through his 60 pitches. Santana used his slider and change while hitting 93 on the gun. Santana will get at least one more rehab start to get up to about 80 pitches and may be able to rejoin the big club around May 14 vs. Boston or May 15 against Texas.
John Lackey will throw tonight for the Salt Lake City Bees. Kelvim Escobar threw a bullpen session which featured him sitting for a few minutes between pitching sessions to simulate waiting on the bench during the offensive part of the inning.
After last night's game the Angels activated Kevin Jepsen from the disabled list and optioned him to AAA.
MLB Trade Rumors takes a look at the 2010 contract options for the Angels.
