The news is not good as the Angels head towards the All Star break. Not only did Los Angeles fall out of first place by losing two of three to the Rangers yet again, they will also be starting their three game series with the New York Yankees without both Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero as both were placed on the disabled list Friday.
Torii Hunter, arguably the team's most valuable player is out with adductor strain in his right side.
Hunter's injury also robs him of his very worthy inclusion at the 200 All Star Game in St. Louis where he'd be representing the Angels for the first time. Hunter believes he will be able to return to the lineup by July 22nd.
"That's what hurts," Hunter said Wednesday, when he knew there was a chance of him going on the DL. "It's hard to sit out the All-Star Game when people voted for you, and it's your first time going as an Angel. I want to represent."
Guerrero is out with a strained muscle behind his left knee and lower hamstring.
To fill the roster the Angels have recalled infielder Brandon Wood and catcher Bobby Wilson. The addition of Wilson will allow the Angels to use Mike Napoli as the designated hitter.
It's unknown how much playing time the highly touted Wood will see, perhaps he'll get a shot at first base when the Angels face back to back left handers on Saturday and Sunday. It's likely Gary Matthews Jr. will take over in center-field. LA Times blogger Steve Bisheff suggests Mike Scioscia move Chone Figgins to center-field and insert Wood into the lineup.
Bill Plunkett analyzes the mysterious performance issues regarding Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders.
Mark Teixeira returns to Anaheim for the first time since signing with the Yankees over the winter.
"That's a special organization. If my family was from the West Coast I'd probably still be an Angel. But family is very important to me and I hope people can understand that."
Good luck with that one Mark.
