This Day in Angels Baseball: April 2nd, 1996

Opening day April, 2 1996 did not go so well for the California Angels as they lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 15-9.  The 15 runs scored against them is the most by an opponent on any opening day in Angels history.  1996 was also the last year the Angels would be called the California Angels.  The Walt Disney Company took control of the Angels in 1997 and along with the city of Anaheim started renovations to the stadium.  When the city of Anaheim contributed to the renovation one of the conditions was that both the stadium and team's name have the word "Anaheim" and so the Angels were named Anaheim Angels after the 1996 season was over. The Angels had been the California Angels from 1965-1996.
