Opening day April 6, 1999 saw the Anaheim Angels beat the Cleveland Indians 6-5 at Edison International Field. The Angels got home runs from Tim Salmon and Garret Anderson that day in the win. 1999 was the first year with the Angels for Mo Vaughn after the slugging first baseman left the Boston Red Sox. In this game Vaughn fell down the visitor's dugout steps chasing a foul-ball and sprained his ankle. Vaughn had been plagued by injuries in his Angels career and while he did produce 30-plus home run and over 100 RBI seasons in 1999 and 2000 he did not live up to the expectations of his six year, $80 million contract with the Angels. Vaughn was traded to the New York Mets at the end of 2001 for Kevin Appier.
