Brian Anderson pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits before Mark Leiter would lose in relief in the top of the 11th inning. The Angels used 4 pitchers in the game and gave up a club record 8 doubles to the Royals. The Angels scoring came from a Bo Jackson home run in the 8th inning. Jackson, who was a 20th round pick by the Angels in the 1985 draft but never signed would later come to the Angels as a free agent starting the 1994 season. Jackson, who had battled hip injuries before coming to the Angels in 1994 as a two-sport player in football and baseball, hit a career high .279 with the Angels that year -- but two days after this game his season was cut short by the players strike and Jackson would retire from pro sports before the 1995 season.

Steve Renko moved his record to 10-3 on the season, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits and Andy Hassler pitched the last 2 2/3 innings for the save. Bobby Grich hit a home run driving in 2 in the game and Doug DeCinces would hit 3 homers and knock in 4. Just 5 days earlier at Anaheim Stadium, DeCinces also homered 3 times, making him the only Angel to hit 3 home runs in a game more than once. DeCinces was traded by the Baltimore Orioles with Jeff Schneider at the beginning of 1982 for Dan Ford. In 1982, his first year with the Angels he set career highs in runs (94), home runs (30), RBI (97) and avg. (.301). DeCinces won a Silver Slugger award in 1982 with the Angels and made his first All-Star team as an Angel in 1983. In his six years with the Angels DeCinces averaged 22
home runs and 80 RBI.
