Interview conducted on April 4th, 2011 by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer
Last August, Eddie Bane dropped an exclusive tidbit to AngelsWin.com when he said that Jean Segura “might even be looked at as a shortstop in the future as he has that kind of range and arm.” Later in the year, Abe Flores confirmed that Segura was indeed making the transition to shortstop during Instructional League.
During the 2010 season, Segura posted a .313/.365/.464 line with 50 SBs in 60 attempts. With that kind of success, he was easily ranked as the #2 prospect in the Angels’ organization by AngelsWin.com.
When I saw Segura play, both Spring Training (where he posted a .294 AVG with 1 SB in 13 games) and in the IE 66ers Home Opener, Segura showed good range and a strong arm for the position. His defense was above where I thought it would be considering the transition to SS. In the Home Opener, he made a great play down the 3B line to catch a pop-up.
Part of the joy of going to Minor League games is the chance to see the future of the franchise. For the IE 66ers, one of their many bright spots is their shortstop, Jean Segura. His skill set and talent place him on the fast track to the Majors, almost as fast as a former teammate of his, Mike Trout. Angels fans should definitely make a point to head out to Arrowhead Credit Union ballpark to see him play.
