Our next update of Angels WAR rankings, as told by Fangraphs' WAR statistic. (Minimum IP = 20.)
Name - WAR
Jered Weaver (2.6)
C.J. Wilson (2.1)
Dan Haren (1.3)
Jerome Williams (1.1)
Ernesto Frieri (0.8)
Scott Downs (0.6)
LaTroy Hawkins (0.4)
David Carpenter (0.3)
Jordan Walden (0.3)
Hisanori Takahashi (0.1)
Garrett Richards (0.1)
Jason Isringhausen (0.0)
Ervin Santana (-0.3)
WAR doesn't have many surprises here for the Angels staff right now. This is about what we expect based on what we've seen so far this year. Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson are the only two standouts of the starting rotation. Haren has taken a big step back so far with his back injury really hampering his performance. Jerome Williams has been fine, but not great. Ernesto Frieri and Scott Downs have been bullpen stalwarts and are posting as much WAR as can reasonably be expected of a top reliever.
Some may be surprised by Garrett Richards's puny WAR total (only 0.1), but the Fangraphs metric used to determine pitcher WAR is not a fan of Richards. That metric is called Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) and it only measures three things: strikeouts, walks, and home runs allowed. Richards has not been good in any of those three categories. Until those improve, his WAR still stay low, no matter what his ERA does. Whether you agree with that philosophy is another story, but I do think that, at the very least, we shouldn't yet expect Richards to be anything more than an average number 5 starter until he shows improvement in his peripherals.
Other than Haren, the biggest disappointment continues to be Ervin Santana. Still sub-replacement level with -0.3 WAR accumulated so far.
