San Juan Capistrano, CA – After getting off to a fast start, the Los Angeles Angels All-Star karaoke team failed to capture the Grand Champions Trophy at the 5th annual “Bob’s Pizza and Yogurt All-Star Karaoke Jam.”
The team got off to a strong start, with ace Jared Weaver singing a rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,” followed by Torii Hunter, and his version of Steppenwolf’s legendary “Born to Be Wild.” The 1-2 punch of Weaver/Hunter proved to be too strong for their 1st round opponents from Fountain Bowl.
In the second round Kendrys Morales was one again clutch, battling through Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” but it would get a little dicey later in the round when he handed off to Albert Pujols, who attempted all 8 minutes and 33 seconds of Don McLean’s “American Pie.”
Halfway through the song Albert appeared to re-injure his hamstring, and karaoke team manager Mike Scioscia had to put in pinch-singer Peter Bourjos.
Said Scioscia ”Albert was really battling out there, but right as he was going into the third chorus, he re-aggravated that hamstring again, we’ll take it day-to-day, Peter really stepped it up, and got us through that round.”
Round three went much smoother, with Mike Trout dominating the competition singing Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies,” and CJ Wilson with a surprisingly strong version of Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue.”
“There’s no doubt (Mike) Trout is our MVP, they way he channeled Beyonce, he commanded the stage.”
“He was singing at a much higher level then what we would expect a 21 year old to perform.” said Wilson
It was in the fourth and final round, against defending Champions Tustin Heating and Air, where the Angels would falter. Zack Greinke was dominant during the medley of “Bohemian Rhapsody/Dust in the Wind/Hit me with your Best Shot.” but was relieved during the medley by Garrett Richards, who struggled with control of his pitch. Scioscia then went to closer Ernesto Frieri who was unable to close out the medley.
Said Scioscia “I didn’t want to overuse Greinke, so I went to the bullpen, and they got to us.”
“We’ll tip our cap, and turn the page.” Scioscia added.
