2013 Outlook: In 2012 we saw a slight concern with Jered as his average fastball velocity dipped down a full tick from 89 to 88 mph. However, Jered does several other things really well that compensate for the lost velocity. Look to Jered to be the team ace again this year as he does an incredible job entering each game with a plan of attack, throws first pitch strikes, pounds the zone, and pitches to contact which will allow the Angels excellent defensive arrangement to make even the most dangerous hits look routine.
Jered's consistent release points combined with his pinpoint control (resulting in his low WHIP's) plus a variety of pitches that reach 88-92 on his fastball down to the high 60's on his curveball that keep most hitters off balance and helps to induce a lot of weak contact in the form of line drives and fly balls. Jered has one of the best, if not THE best changeup in the major leagues. The fly balls he generates will find a lot of gloves this year as our up the middle defense is truly outstanding with Aybar, Kendrick, and Bourjos. Combine that with Trout and Hamilton in the corner outfield positions and it is a recipe for success.
Jered, barring injury, should produce another strong outing this year, and he is clearly a captain of this team. Look for him to lead by example and pick up any slack if other members of the team falter. He is a great asset to the pitching staff, a true clubhouse leader, and his character has its roots in what it really means to be as an Angels player: Grit, Determination, and Playing Baseball the Right Way.
