ANAHEIM, CA – The Angels Tuesday traded outfielder Vernon Wells to the New York Yankees in exchange for outfielder Exicardo Cayones, LHP Kramer Sneed and cash considerations. Today’s transaction was announced by General Manager Jerry Dipoto.
Cayones, 21, spent the 2012 season playing for New York’s Single-A Staten Island Yankees. The outfielder posted a .228 (36/158) clip last season, logged 15 RBI and made just one error in 47 games for the short season Yankees. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Pirates in 2008, Cayones was acquired by the Yankees as part of the A.J. Burnett trade with Pittsburgh prior to the 2012 campaign. Over four minor league seasons, the Valencia, Venezuela native owns a .261 (164/629) batting average with 99 runs scored and 83 RBI.
Sneed, 24, spent the 2012 campaign with Class-A Tampa in the Florida State League and posted an 0-7 record with a 5.37 ERA (63.2 IP – 38 ER) and 49 strikeouts in 31 games (4 starts). In three career minor league seasons, he has a 6-19 overall record with a 4.39 ERA (207 IP – 101 ER) and 210 strikeouts. The native of Winterville, NC was drafted by the Yankees in the 32nd round of the 2010 amateur draft out of Barton College (NC).
Wells, 34, played the last two seasons in an Angel uniform, batting .222 (166/748) with 36 home runs and 95 RBI in 208. The Louisiana native was originally acquired by the Angels on January 21, 2011 from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Juan Rivera. Over his 14 year career, the three-time All-Star has amassed a career .273 (1695/6218) batting average with 259 home runs and 908 RBI.
