Angels select LHP Hunter Green from Warren East HS (KY) with first selection

Warren East High School (KY) Talent Goes to the Halos in the Second Round (59th overall)

ANAHEIM, CA – The Angels selected left-handed pitcher Hunter Green from Warren East High School in Bowling Green, Kentucky with their first pick (2nd round, 59th overall) in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft conducted Thursday by Major League Baseball.  This announcement was made by Angels’ Director of Scouting Ric Wilson.

“Hunter Green is a pitcher we liked tremendously and we are thrilled to select him”, said Wilson.  “He has a good size, a young loose arm and a high ceiling.  We project him as a starter as he has many Major League starting pitcher traits.”

Green, 17 (turns 18 July 12th), is a 6’3”, 175-pound southpaw who committed to the University of Kentucky and is the No. 1 ranked player in Kentucky's Class of 2013.  He is the No. 2 ranked player in the Prep Baseball Report’s (PBR) combined rankings and listed as the No. 31 overall draft prospect by Baseball America.

During Green’s senior campaign at Warren East HS, he went 3-1 with a 0.14 ERA in 10 starts. After surrendering one earned run in his season debut, he did not allow an earned run for the remainder of the season. Green struck out 110 batters and walked 37 according to statistics on the Warren East baseball team’s website.

As a junior, he went 6-2 with a 1.76 earned run average, striking out 111 in 52 innings, including a 20-strikeout no-hitter against Edmonson County that season.  Green is the second player drafted from Warren East High School in school history.  Right-handed pitcher Mark Biggs was drafted in the eighth round in 2011 by the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Angels did not have a selection during the first round of the draft after surrendering their pick (22nd overall) for the signing of outfielder Josh Hamilton this past offseason. This is the second consecutive season in which the Angels did not have a first round pick, marking the first time this has occurred in franchise history. The club surrendered its 2012 first round pick for the signing of Albert Pujols.

The draft will continue tomorrow (June 7) with rounds 3-10 and Saturday (June 8) with rounds 11
