Chris Pettit is on FIRE in Triple-A for the Salt Lake Bees
By Jason Sinner - Angelswin.com Columnist
1. Chris Pettit, OF, Salt Lake City Bees
Past 7 days: 17/27 (.630avg), 5 doubles, triple, 5RBI, 2bb/2k, 3sb/0cs
Overall: .429/.475/.644/1.119, 1hr, 10 doubles, 5sb
What’s up: He’s freakin’ possessed! He’s doing everything he possibly can to prove that last year’s injury marred season was an aberration. Billed by Eddie Bane as having the best plate discipline in the organization, Chris is moving up the depth chart in a hurry. He’s got good speed and appears to have good instincts on the basepaths (40sb/10cs in about 1.5 seasons worth of minor league Abs). His career minor league OBP (.398) is about 100 points higher than his BA and he has an SLG of around .500. That’s right, a career minor league OPS of .900 even with a poor performance last year. It will be interesting to see where he fits in with it being a possibility that the big club turns over some OFers at year’s end.
2. Hank Conger, C, Arkansas Travelers
Past 10 days: 14/27 (.519avg), 1hr, 2 doubles, 4rbi
Overall: .273/.317/.338/.655
What’s up: Hank’s average. A torrid week brought his numbers to a nearly respectable level after a very slow start. He’s also recorded his only 3 xbhs in that stretch. Regardless of what the reports indicate, we are going to cut him some slack as he was likely still recovering from last year’s injury. It will be very interesting to see what he can do going forward ie if he can find that power stroke and improve his plate discipline. This is also a big year in terms of how his defense progresses. The good news is that he’s only 21 years old at AA and has been plagued by injury so to see that he’s made strides on both sides of the ball is encouraging.
3. Manuel Flores, SP, Cedar Rapids Kernels
Last 7 days: 15ip, 9h, 2bb, 8k, 0.00era
Overall: 1-2, 1.93era, 28.0ip, 20h, 2bb, 17k
What’s up: Manual gave up his first two walks of the season in his last two starts (one in each). My guess is that the ump was wrong. He’s done a tremendous job this year coming off of a strong performance in the AZL last year topped off by a 9ip, 4h, 0er outing today. He only walked 10 in 74 innings last year while striking out 63. My guess is that the 21yo lefty will move pretty quick if he maintains that kind of control. He’s really starting to come into his own after a subpar 2007 as it appears he was getting acclimated after a year in the Dominican league.
4. Alexia Amarista, 2b, Cedar Rapids Kernels
Last 7 days: 10-27 (.370avg), double, 2 triples, 5 RBI, 4sb
Overall: .346/.419/.531/.950, 7 doubles, 4 triples, 0hr, 10rbi, 9bb/8k, 9sb, 3cs
What’s up: This kid can hit. At 5’8” (maybe) 150lbs, you would think he be a slap hitter but by all accounts, Alexia can drive the ball and has good xbh power. It’s pretty impressive when after he k’d twice today he only then had more strikeouts than doubles. He still has more bb and stolen bases than Ks – not combined, but each. A .900+ ops from a guy of his size and speed is impressive and his plate discipline is a breath of fresh air for such a young player. Reminds me of that one guy who may have just won an MVP.
5. Bryan ‘The Hat’ Rembisz, RP, Arkansas Travelers
Overall: 10.1ip, 2h, 0er, 5bb, 7k, 1-1 with a 0.00era
What’s up: Bryan’s story is a good one. Out of the University of Vermont, Bryan was pitching for the independent league ‘Beach Bums’ of Traverse City, MI when he was picked up by the Halos and sent to Rancho in 2008 (1-1, 3.44era, 36.2ip, 34h, 5bb, 26k). Eddie Bane affectionately refers to him as ‘The Hat’ in that Bryan is 5’8. “Because when he is on the mound he is so short that it looks like a hat and a jersey” jokes Eddie. Well, apparently he can make the ball disappear as well surrendering only two hits in 10.1ip.
6. Bobby Wilson, C, Salt Lake City Bees
Past 7 days: 7/18 (.389), double, 4 RBI, bb
Overall: .333/.393/.608/1.001, 3hr, 3 doubles, triple, 5bb/7k in 51abs
What’s up: Bobby seems to be making the most of his opportunities considering that he has Napoli and Mathis ahead of him at the major league level and sharing ABs with Ryan Budde at AAA. From all accounts he is the best defense catcher of the group. It will be hard to ignore this kind of production for much longer as he continues to build off of a very strong season in 2008 (.821ops). Yet another guy in the Halos system in need of an opportunity.
7. Trevor Bell, SP, Arkansas Travelers
Past 7 days: 7ip, 3h, 1bb, 4k
Overall: 2-0, 24ip, 17h, 8bb, 13k
What’s up: Another week and another strong outing for Trevor. Highly touted as an early round draft pick, Trevor has been all over the road in terms of performance with last year’s slow start and spending time out of the pen putting him back under the radar. Well, now he’s back on it with his second week in a row on the prospect hotlist.
8. Trevor Reckling, SP, Arkansas Travelers
Last 7 days: 6.0ip, 4h, 2er, 5bb, 6k
Overall: 3-2, 1.16era, 31.0ip, 16h, 11bb, 26k
What’s up: Another quality start for TRecks and the Travs. The impressive thing about Trevor is his ability to limit damage. He almost doubled his walk total for the season in his last start yet was still able to go six innings while allowing just two runs. Pretty amazing considering he’s just 19 and the youngest player in the league by almost a full year.
9. Robert Mosebach, RP, Salt Lake City Bees
Past 15 days (since his promotion from AA): 8.1ip, 9h, 0er, 3bb, 6k, 0.00era, W, S
Overall: 13.1ip, 13h, 0er, 6bb, 9k, 0.00era, W, S
What’s up: It appears his conversion is going well. Making the transition to a reliever, Robert has yet to give up a run. After a fairly disappointing season as a starter last year for the Travs (4.62era, 177.1ip, 206h, 69bb, 88k), Bob seemed a natural for a bullpen spot with a solid two pitch repertoire (fastball and slider). My guess is that we will see him up in the majors before the end of the year especially with the way things have been going.
10. Julio Perez, OF, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
Last 7 days: 8/22 (.364avg), 1 double, 1 hr, 7 RBI
Overall: .299/.319/.517/.836, 6 double, 2 triples, 3 hr, 18 RBI, 3bb, 19k
What’s up: No doubt that Julio has some pop in his bat but Erick Aybar thinks this kid is a free swinger. With just 17bb in 412ab last year and 48 in over 800 minor league at bats, he will likely need to improve his plate discipline if he wants to continue to make progress. He’s got some speed and can steal a bag or two. It seems Julio has some tools so hopefully he can put it all together.
