On April 10, 2009 the Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 6-3 before more than 41,000 fans at Angel Stadium. The game was played just a day after the death of Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart. This would be an emotional day for the Angels and their fans so it was hard to tell what would happen, especially facing their playoff rivals the Red Sox. Jered Weaver pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up only an unearned run while striking out 8. The Angels got six runs on ten hits off of Tim Wakefield and Justin Masterson in the game. Weaver carved Adenhart's initials in the dirt on the mound before every inning that night. On September 28, 2009, while the Angels celebrated winning the American League West division, they honored Adenhart and then gathered in front of the outfield wall memorial for a team picture. The Angels went on to sweep the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS before losing to the New York Yankees in the ALCS 4-2. Adenhart's teammates voted to give his family a full playoff share for the 2009 playoffs. Manager Mike Scioscia also dedicated his 2009 American League Manager of The Year Award to Nick Adenhart.
