Opening day April 8th 1969 saw the California Angels lose to the Seattle pilots 4-3. Seattle got all their runs in the first inning off Jim McGlothlin who only retired one batter before being removed for Clyde Wright. Jim Fregosi would later homer in the game for the Angels. 1969 would be the last year for the Angels original manager Bill Rigney who was fired after the team lost 28 of their first 39 games. He was replaced by Lefty Phillips as the Angels would go on to a 71-91 third place finish. Rigney who was a native of Alameda, California became the expansion Los Angeles Angels first manager in 1961 and remained until the 1969 season, winning the AL manager of the year award in 1962 as the expansion Angels finished 86-76 in their second season.
