DETROIT - Scot Shields  has emerged from last year's knee surgery with his self-deprecating humor intact. His pitching, however, isn't as sharp as his wit yet.

Some stats don't need that much analysis. The Angels finished the first month of the season with a .500 record (12-12). In their 12 victories, the Angels' starting pitchers had an ERA of 2.48 with 68 strikeouts and 13 walks in 80 innings (an average of 6 2/3 innings per start). In the Angels' 12 losses, their starting pitchers had an ERA of 8.32 with 35 strikeouts and 27 walks in 61 2/3 innings (barely five innings per start).
