Salt Lake Bees
The Good: Daniel Davidson went a solid seven innings, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out six on Friday. Amalio Diaz (2.41) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief on Sunday, striking out four. Unfortunately, there's not a whole a lot more to add. Terry Evans, (4) Drew Sutton (2) and Paul McAnulty (1) hit home runs over the weekend and Trumbo went 3-for-11. Hank Conger went 3-10 over the weekend and is hitting .382 over his last ten games. Conger has the same amount of walks (23) as he does strikeouts, sporting a solid .370 OBP on the season.
The Bad: Trevor Reckling got worked up pretty good again on Sunday, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits in just 4 2/3 innings. Reckling's ERA currently is at 6.82 on the season.
Noteworthy: Brandon Wood went just 1-12 over the weekend with four strikeouts. In his 24 at bats since going down to Salt Lake, Brandon Wood has just two hits, neither of which were extra base hits.
Arkansas Travelers
The Good: Roberto Lopez (0.87) clubbed a three-run home run on Saturday, his only hit over the weekend. INF Kevin Ramos who was recently promoted from Cedar Rapids had five hits over the weekend, including three on Sunday. Ramos is hitting .353 for Travelers through five games. Robert Fish (1.74) continued his fine season by throwing three scoreless innings of relief, walking none while striking out four.
The Bad: Clay Fuller has just four hits in his last ten games, hitting .125 over that span. Fuller has three home runs and three stolen bases, but he's hitting just .174 with just a .228 OBP on the season.
Noteworthy: Though off to a slow start with the Travelers in the batting average department, Roberto Lopez has clubbed a combined 19 doubles, seven home runs and sported .522 slugging pct in 2010. His batting average is at a combined .317 average despite his early struggles with the Travs.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
The Good: The Starting Pitching! All three starters over the weekend had a quality start. Matt Shoemaker (3.95) kicked off the weekend with another fine start, going seven innings and giving up just one run, while fanning seven. The recently promoted Orangel Arenas (5.91) pitched on Saturday and gave up just two runs over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six. Tyler Chatwood went seven strong innings, giving up just one run (a home run), while walking just one and striking out four. Chatwood lowered his ERA down to 1.87 and improved to 7-2 on the season. Eddie McKiernan (3.63) nailed down two saves over the weekend, giving him nine on the season. Alexi Amarista had three hits and walked three times over the weekend, stealing his 14th base while clubbing his 3rd home run. The 5'8 Amarista is the Quakes #3 hitter and sports an OPS over .900 at .903. Tyson Auer (.301) stole three bases over the weekend, giving him 31 on the season. 3B Luis Jimenez (.407) clubbed five hits over the weekend, including three on Sunday to push his average over .400.
The Bad: Andrew Taylor took the loss on Saturday giving up two late runs to cost Orangel Arenas the win, in an inning of work. He did strike out three, giving him 34 on the season over 30 innings of work.
Noteworthy: The Quakes pitching staff is currently ranked second in the California League in total strikeouts with 447, one strike out less than the leader at 448 (Visalia Oaks).
Cedar Rapids Kernels
The Good: Jean Segura (.300) continued his hot hitting over the weekend with five hits, two triples (5) and a stolen base (21). Casey Haerther (.309) is also red hot, hitting .400 over his last ten games, including five hits over the weekend. Mike Trout had a day off on Sunday and went just 1-7 over the weekend, but he did knock in a couple runs, walked and stole two bases, giving him 30 on the season. Carlos Ramirez (.187) busted out of a long slump with three hits on Friday, two of which were doubles. Stephen Locke (3.38) won his first game as a member of the Kernels on Friday, going seven strong innings, giving up just one run on four hits.
The Bad: Garrett Richards (3.33) had a poor outing on Saturday, giving up five runs on 11 hits, in five innings of work. He did strike out six batters in five innings and gave up just one walk. Fabio Martinez Mesa (4.10) gave up four runs over five innings of work, walking five vs. seven strikeouts. Fabio continues to lead the Midwest League in strikeouts (86) and walks (46). Fabio's control needs some serious work going forward.
Noteworthy: Sorry, no Mike Trout updates tomorrow morning. The Kernels have the day off on Monday.
