Postponed due to rain against Portland Beavers
Day off on Tuesday
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
The Good: The toolsy OF Angel Castillo went 3-4 with a double and home run. Castillo is batting .221 on the season. 3B Luis Jimenez (.333) clubbed his first double as a member of the Quakes after leading the Midwest League in that category before his promotion. Jimenez went 1-4 on the night. Reliever Andrew Taylor was stretched out in relief going 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. Taylor struck out two and lowered his ERA to 1.86 on the season.
The Bad: Kyle Hurst started in place of Ryan Chaffee who was a late scratch and went just 1 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out two. Hurst gave up a three run home run in the first inning.
Noteworthy: The Quakes (29-24) return home on Thursday, June 3rd, as they open a four-game series against Lancaster. Patrick Corbin (0-0) starts in the series-opener on Thursday night.
Cedar Rapids Kernels
The Good: Mike Trout flashed his power and speed on Tuesday, clubbing his sixth home run of the season, going 2-4 while stealing two bases to give him 28 on the season. Trout leads the Midwest League in batting average at .365 for the season. C/1B Jose Jimenez (.255) went 3-4 with a home run, his fourth and two RBI's. Jean Segura went 2-4 with an RBI. Fabio Martinez Mesa (3.81) went seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits, while striking out eight, but he did walk seven batters. Fabio is missing a lot of bats in the MWL and opponents are hitting just .197 off him, but he has issued 41 free passes and his WHIP currently sits at 1.45.
The Bad: SS Jon Karcich committed two errors on the night, his 7th and 8th on the season. Eight errors in 19 games is pretty bad. Karcich also went 0-4 on the night, lowering his batting average to .164 on the season.
Noteworthy: The top two leaders in strikeouts in the Midwest League are Fabio Martinez Mesa (79) and Garrett Richards (64). Martinez-Mesa also leads the Midwest League in walks with 41. Randal Grichuk (thumb) should be back by the first week of August. Ariel Pena gets his second start on the season as a member of the Cedar Rapids Kernels tonight vs. the Lansing Lugnuts.
Prospect of the Day: Angel Castillo, OF RC Quakes & Fabio Martinez Mesa, RHP CR Kernels
