As hard as it is for some Angels fans to believe, there are some catchers in the organization who can hit. Take Abel Baker for example. Prior to the draft he showed off his offensive skills when he went a 5 for 8 in the two games his team played in the 2011 Junior College World Series.
Selected by the Angels in the 7th round (225th overall), Baker has good catch-and-throw skills. A left-hander, Baker has a plus bat that should add more power as he physically matures. At 20-years old (he turns 21 in October), Baker has time to develop in the system. With Conger and Ramirez ahead of him, Baker’s left-handed bat could complement either player, which would make for a dynamic combination behind the plate.
